One trick I recently learned from Youtube was to use a flashlight in pitch black condition. You use the flashlight to allow your camera to do the focus, shut the flashlight off and shoot with the flash on.

Here's what it looks like using my Minolta Z1 in black and white mode. speed was set at 1/60 and aperture at f8. I used a cheap dollar store LED flashlight to set the autofocus.

I like the humor in this one.

 These shots were taken in an alley of my neighborhood this evening.

A study in Macro Black and White

My recent purchase of a Minolta Z1 has proven to be interesting. It's in no way near what my Nikon can do but it still has some potential. I've decided to dedicate it to Black and White.

In order to see its potential, I took my bike bottle opener off my key chain and decided to take some shots. The Minolta has an awesome macro lens and I'm pretty happy with what came out of the exercise.

Photographing Montreal Chinatown at night

Chinatown here in Montreal is small but very lively. I really feel like I'm in another country when I go there. I guess it's like traveling on the cheap and fast.

Restaurant Sai Gwan is a classic Mom and Pop operation.

I love the colors, the variety in the images and the fact that I can't make out what is written everywhere! The letters now become part of the decor when they have no meaning for you.

Up those stairs is the restaurant where my parents used to go when they were dating back in the early 60's

This is a perfect example for the rule of 3 in composition. For those wondering, an image should be divided in 3 horizontal sections and 3 vertical sections to please the eye. There are exceptions of course. :)

My New Minolta Dimage Z1

3.2 MP Minolta Dimage Z1 $15 Value Village special

 Yes, a brand new in the box Minolta Dimage Z1. I know it's a dinosaur but it has full manual controls so I can play with it. The resolution is crap but decent and besides the price was right...$15.

A camera is a camera and it's never a bad thing to have a spare digital cam lying around. It has some great features like up to 30 second exposure so I can experiment more on night shots than I can with the Nikon and Minolta was very good at doing macro. Tomorrow's episode of Wolverine was shot with this camera btw.

I also love the challenge of taking good pictures with whatever I have. This is no different and my images will get better as I learn to use it. It won't be the best but who knows, "vintage" digital might become the next big thing. Right now I am so not mainstream that I could be considered for a hipster photo safari (If there is such a thing).
